Kyshawn George, a family first

Memories for life. A very large part of Kyshawn George’s family was gathered Sunday evening at the Bell Center in Montreal to watch his first NBA steps during a preseason match against the Toronto Raptors (98-125).

Selected by the Washington Wizards before the summer, the 20-year-old from Valais has a Canadian father, Deon, who grew up in Quebec and spent four years at Saint Francis University. Around thirty places have been requisitioned so that loved ones can enjoy this special moment together. “In all, there were 47 of us in the room,” explains Kyshawn’s mother, Sophie, not yet completely recovered from this whirlwind of emotions. I just got off the phone with a friend from Monthey and that’s what I told her: we’re living a waking dream.”

Kyshawn’s family members, some of whom were seeing him play in person for the first time, wore personalized t-shirts with his name and a photo of him. For the occasion, grandpa was in the VIP boxes, not far from Raptors legend Vince Carter, while grandma was equipped with a microphone for the match. “It was an initiative of Kyshawn’s frankness,” continues Sophie. The Wizards really took care of us and put it forward. It was a great promotion, we couldn’t have hoped for a better first.”

Appearance at the NBA house in a Montreal café for a meeting with the French-speaking fans, microphone in hand in the middle of the floor in the room, or with his young cousins at the edge of the court: the rookie montheysan made a nice impression wherever he passed, as on the floor (8 points in 21 minutes) where he was one of the first two players to come off the Wizards bench.

George and his team will play their second preparation meeting on the night of Thursday to Friday, in New York, against the Knicks.
