Tuesday October 8, at the end of the first day of blockade of Bayonne orchestrated by the fairgrounds, the position of Jean-René Etchegaray, the mayor of the town, has not changed one iota: the dates set for the next Holidays of Bayonne remain the same, from Wednesday July 16 to Sunday July 20. At the same time as the Madeleine Festival, in Mont-de-Marsan, another strong commercial time for fairgrounds.
The snail operations carried out all around the city aimed to make the Bayonne municipality bend so that it returns to an opening of these patronal festivals on the last Wednesday of July. It won’t happen. “I had wanted, since last week, to establish a dialogue with the fairground workers whose incomprehension I had understood. This meeting proposal was received with a refusal: “Move around, there is nothing to see”,” laments Jean-René Etchegaray who says he “took note” of their anger, as well as their capacity mobilization.

“I continue to say that my door is open,” he insists. At the same time, the first of the Bayonnais announces that he will “quickly” meet his Mons counterpart. “The principle is established,” confides the mayor. I received a letter of understanding from Charles Dayot, reciprocal positions. I am delighted about it. He is my first contact. I didn’t say ‘unique’, but ‘first’. »
Could one of the two councilors backpedal on these questions of dates, at the end of the meeting? “There are particularities in the cultural and festive programming of each of our cities in July. We have to discuss this and try to imagine things. Maybe not just in this year 2025, but in a kind of multi-annuality,” explains the mayor of Bayonne, remaining deliberately vague. “We are not narrow-minded, we will try to find a solution,” he assures us.
