Defender Ibrahima Konaté said Tuesday that Antoine Griezmann would have deserved “an extraordinary farewell” to mark his international retirement, underlining the importance of this legend of the Blues. “Griezmann, the famous Grizou… Frankly, what happened saddens me,” said the Liverpool player, referring to the surprise announcement of September 30, where the player with 137 caps (44 goals) decided to put away the blue jersey.

Konaté continued: “With everything he did for France, all his selections in a row without ever missing one (88 in a row, Editor’s note), I think he deserved an extraordinary farewell.” The defender, who has 17 caps, was speaking from the Clairefontaine training center, as part of the preparation for Nations League matches against Israel, Thursday in Budapest, and Belgium, Monday in Brussels.
“Griezmann was the typical example of a leader,” Konaté added. He also regretted that the players had not been informed earlier: “I would have preferred, I think everyone would have preferred to know at the last gathering (in September), for a proper farewell.”
As for Grizou’s announcement, Konaté admitted: “I didn’t even comment on his social networks because I was too surprised”, adding: “No, but no, it’s not possible, it can’t not end like that!”
