MLB Series: Kerry Carpenter pulls out his claws in the 9th and carries the Tigers into Game 2

Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer in the ninth against Emmanuel Clase and the Detroit Tigers won 3-0 at Cleveland on Monday, tying their second-round series against the Guardians 1-1.

Confronted with the star stopper, Carpenter sent the ball 423 feet from the plate, after two outs.

Clase led the American with 47 saves this year. He had not allowed a point since August 30.

“It’s something to have done that against him,” Carpenter said. He is one of the best relievers in baseball. »

Ace Tarik Skubal gave up just two doubles and a single in seven innings, striking out eight batters. On October 1, he shut out the Astros for six innings in Houston in the first round.

Jake Rogers and Trey Sweeney singled with two outs in the ninth. When Clause challenged Carpenter with a third straight slider, the ball ended up well beyond right-center field.

“Emmanuel has been ultra reliable throughout the season,” said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. He was almost perfect, but he is human.

“Those kinds of things are going to happen. It’s unfortunate that it’s happening at this time, but we’re going to continue to bet on him. »

Will Vest took over for Skubal, handling the eighth.

Beau Brieske got the save, closing the books by striking out David Fry on a decision.

Skubal led the American League with 18 wins, 288 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA.

Comerica Park will host games 3 and 4 of the series on Wednesday and Thursday. The confrontation is in a three of five formula.

Guardians’ Alex Cobb will make his first start since September 1 on Wednesday. He spent time on the sidelines due to a blister on his middle finger. Acquired from San Francisco in July, he only got three starts with his new club.

It is not yet known who the starting pitcher for the Tigers will be.

In the regular season, Detroit was 31-13 starting on August 11. The club then dismissed the Astros, the champions of the American West section.
