Through the NHL: news from Jesse Ylönen, Denton Mateychuk, Skyler Brind’Amour

Former Montreal Canadiens glory Jesse Ylönen was unable to carve out a position in the Tampa Bay Lightning lineup.

The Finnish forward is one of the many players who were cut by the Lightning on Sunday, and who will therefore have to report to the Syracuse farm club in the American Hockey League.

Ylönen signed a one-year contract with the Lightning on July 1, after the CH decided not to present him with a qualifying offer. The 25-year-old winger scored 4 goals and collected as many assists in 59 games with the Habs last season.

The former 2nd round pick – 35th overall – of the Canadiens in 2018 has 12 goals and 17 assists in 111 games since the start of his career in the National Hockey League.

In addition, forwards Dylan Duke, Gage Goncalves and Gabriel Szturc are also among the players cut by the Lightning on Sunday.

Sorokin still has hope of being at his post on Thursday

Goaltender Ilya Sorokin still hopes to be part of the New York Islanders, who will play their first game of the season on Thursday evening against the Utah Hockey Club, reports NHL.com.

Sorokin, who is recovering from back surgery this summer, trained again on Sunday and his state of health is still being reassessed daily, said head coach Patrick Roy.

Sorokin went 25-19-12 with a 3.01 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 56 games last season. However, he only participated in one game during the last playoffs, giving 3 goals on 14 shots in Game 3 of the 1st round series against the Carolina Hurricanes before giving way to Semyon Varlamov.

Mateychuk will start the season in the American League

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded defenseman Denton Mateychuk to their American Hockey League affiliate Cleveland, the National Hockey League team announced Sunday.

Mateychuk played 4 games with Cleveland in the playoffs last season, collecting 3 assists. He previously helped the Moose Jaw Warriors win the WHL championship by scoring 17 goals and 58 assists in 52 regular season games before adding 11 goals and 19 assists in 30 playoff games. The Warriors then participated in the Memorial Cup tournament, being eliminated in the semi-finals by the host team, the Saginaw Spirit.

His brilliance allowed him to be named defenseman of the year in the WHL as well as playoff MVP in the circuit. The Manitoban also represented Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship, recording 4 assists in 5 games.

Mateychuk, who is the cousin of Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Owen Pickering, was a 1st round pick – 12th overall – of the Blue Jackets in 2022. He will play his first full professional season in 2024-2025.

The Brind’Amour reunited

The Hurricanes have agreed to terms on a two-way contract with head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s son, Skyler. The forward will earn $775,000 in the NHL, or $75,000 in the AHL. The agreement is for one season only.

At 25 years old, Brind’Amour will be in only his second year as a professional, having played four seasons with Quinnipiac University in the NCAA after two years in the BCHL.

Last season, the Raleigh native played 54 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, the Florida Panthers’ farm club. He scored 3 goals and added 5 assists.
