INTERVIEW. TFC: “If we were to be stepped on again”… Captain Vincent Sierro wants to remain confident despite the results crisis

the essential
At the end of the defeat this Saturday, October 5 against (2-1), the third in three matches, TFC captain Vincent Sierro tries to put on a good face and highlights ’s good intentions, not paid for on this start of season

The weeks follow each other and are similar, with still regrets…

We will say that at the moment, things are not working in our favor. In these moments, you have to stay as a team to correct these small details. There is some good, you shouldn’t throw everything in the trash. We had a good first half. Afterwards, Lille reacted well by putting more intensity. They came back to score, the match was open. We could have won.

We are frustrated but it will give us strength to come back stronger. This bad patch at the start of the season means that there are still some little automatisms to be had. We wanted more victories, that’s for sure, by winning the matches we deserve to win. But there you go, the situation is what it is. We must raise our heads, not give up because there are positives.

DECRYPTION. TFC: attractive but ineffective style, lack of results and worrying ranking… How can Toulouse escape this vicious circle?

By leading 1-0 at the break, didn’t you naively believe you had done the hard part?

We knew they were going to react when they returned from the locker room. The first half, we were good, we didn’t let them play. They pressed us higher afterwards, we couldn’t get the ball out like we did in the first. We tried to play, we lost a ball and we conceded a goal thanks to a nice combination from them. But there was a way to take a point.

What are you missing? Realism? More control in weak times?

Each match has its own truth. Against , we were clearly not sharp enough in the last move because we had a lot of situations. Against Lille, we were better in this register but we had a slow time of ten minutes in the second half during which we did not manage to tighten the lines sufficiently. You have to know how to suffer without conceding a goal. The equalizer puts them back in the match, it warms up the crowd and it gives them energy. Despite everything, we managed to create chances afterwards.

Should you play differently or do you think that sooner or later you will be paid better?

There are things to correct. But if it’s three matches (lost against , Lyon, and Lille) where we only have catastrophic performances, with no opportunities, that we are dominated, that the opponent walks all over us; yes, you are saying to yourself that we really need to change things. But in these last three matches, we are clearly in it. You just have to be sharper, more determination on both surfaces. Our style of play bore fruit last year. And it is not by changing everything, by playing long balls in front to be at the drop-off that we are going to have success.

The next matches (, ) promise to be decisive in this context…

It’s obvious. But we are not discouraged, there is this desire to work to rectify the situation and move up the rankings.
