Schalke choose surprising successor to Geraerts

A few weeks ago, the Belgian reign at Schalke 04 came to an end once again. Indeed, the Gelsenkirchen club ended its collaboration with Karel Geraerts as coach after the disappointing results this season and disagreements with technical director Ben Manga.

Marc Wilmots also had to leave his post as sporting director and Schalke is therefore taking another path. The club is currently only 14th in the 2.Bundesliga and hopes to move out of the red zone quickly.

Van Wonderen succeeded at Geraerts

To do this, the club also found a new coach and this name is surprising. Indeed, according to Sky SportsKees van Wonderen sera le nouvel entraîneur.

The 55-year-old Dutchman was already seen in the stadium boxes during the match against Hertha BSC on Saturday evening. As a player, Van Wonderen was especially all the rage at Feyenoord and also earned five caps with the Oranjes.

He started his coaching career as an assistant at FC Twente before becoming head coach of Go Ahead Eagles and Heerenveen.

Free after leaving Heerenveen

He left the latter club last summer after the expiration of his contract which was not renewed. A few months later, Van Wonderen will take on a major challenge. Ultimately, Schalke obviously wants to return to the Bundesliga, but after a few lean years and numerous sporting and extra-sporting problems, this will not be easy. Geraerts lasted just under a year, let’s wait and see how Van Wonderen does.
