MLB Series: The Padres join the Dodgers in the division series

A solo homer by Kyle Higashioka started a five-run second-inning surge by the San Diego Padres, who swept their first-round series against the Atlanta Braves with a 5-4 victory on Wednesday.

Manny Machado added a two-run double with the bases loaded and Jackson Merrill followed with a two-run triple in front of a record crowd of 47,705 at Petco Park.

The Padres will now head to Los Angeles to face Shohei Ohtani’s Dodgers starting Saturday.

The Dodgers will be thirsty for revenge, having been eliminated by the Padres in 2022.

The starters of both teams, Max Fried (Braves) and Joe Musgrove (Padres), quickly left the meeting.

Fried was removed from the mound after just two innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits. Musgrove left after three and two thirds innings. He allowed one run on a hit.

Down 5-2 in the eighth, the Braves saw Michael Harris II hit a two-run homer to make it 5-4, but they were unable to keep the momentum going.
