PSG: Lazy Donnarumma, Alonzo’s harsh bulletin

Gianluigi Donnarumma cost PSG goals again on Tuesday evening with a missed exit then a passive attitude on a free kick. The Italian cannot correct his faults over time. Jérôme Alonzo points the finger at the goalkeeper’s training.

How can you be one of the best goalkeepers of your generation, be so effective on your line, but make so many obvious errors in important matches? This is the destiny of Gianluigi Donnarumma at PSG since his arrival in 2021. We knew the Italian goalkeeper was average in his kick-starts but Tuesday evening he recalled that aerial exits were not his strong point either. Against Arsenal, he went through on the first goal with a header by Kai Havertz. Then, on the second goal, he remained planted on his line on Bukayo Saka’s saveable shot.

Insufficient work at PSG?

Even before the final whistle on Tuesday evening, he was designated as the main person responsible for the Parisian defeat. In the aerial domain and on set pieces in particular, the Italian has accumulated errors in recent months. Last season, PSG conceded avoidable goals from corners against Barça in the first leg of the C1 quarter-final and against Dortmund in the return semi-final. Enough to question the real value of Donnarumma. Former goalkeeper of the club, Jérôme Alonzo believes that the Italian is still the ideal goalkeeper for PSG. Also deficient in outings at the start of his career, Alonzo recommends greater work in training in this area.

« You resume broadcasts after PSG-Barça in March, the debate will be the same. At the time, I told you “If in 6-7 months we don’t see any progress, we will have to ask ourselves questions about the real quality of the goalkeeper or the way in which he trains”. On the qualities, I think he has them: he has good footwork. On short supports, it is one of the best in the world. I don’t even talk about size. The mind? Apparently he’s a warrior. He has everything to be good everywhere. Why is this boy not progressing and even regressing? The more things go, the less things go because he loses confidence. On action, he doesn’t know when to go. Timing needs to be worked on. Presence needs to be worked on. But you have to want to do it », he analyzed in L’Equipe de Greg. Advice in the form of a warning as Parisian supporters lose patience and Safonov waits in the shadows.
