According to reporter Aaron Portzline, who covers team activities for The Athleticthe National Hockey League (NHL) and the Players’ Association (NHLA) will allow the Ohio team to start the next campaign under the salary floor of $65 million provided for in the collective agreement.

The deadline to comply is October 7.

Following the sudden death of forward Johnny Gaudreau, the Blue Jackets find themselves with a payroll of approximately $61.6 million.

The league, however, allows the team to add a signing bonus of $2 million granted to Gaudreau on 1is last July to its payroll for the next season. The Jackets thus find themselves approximately $1.4 million below the salary floor, according to the specialized site Puck Pedia.

This will give them a little more time to try to hire players to reach the salary floor after the start of the next season without having to go after a bad contract in the coming days.

This solution was proposed to the league by the Blue Jackets, according to Portzline.
