NHL: ’64 million reasons’ why Swayman should play, says Cam Neely

Boston Bruins president Cam Neely commented on Jeremy Swayman’s contract situation Monday, apparently referring to the team’s offer to the goaltender who is a restricted free agent.

“I don’t want to get into the details of his demands, but I know I have 64 million reasons why I would play right now,” Neely said, obviously referring to a $64 million offer.

Swayman is not in Bruins camp and head coach Jim Montgomery told reporters Monday that currently Joonas Korpisalo will be the Bruins’ starter for Game 1 of the regular season on Oct. 8.

TSN Hockey insider Pierre LeBrun said last week that discussions continue between the two camps, but that the team’s first game is likely the deadline to find common ground.

“There are ongoing discussions. I was told Tuesday that this is the status quo and that an agreement is not on the horizon, LeBrun said last week. It gives me the impression that despite the pressure of the situation, their real deadline is the opening match. The two sides continue to negotiate. »

“The key thing is that Swayman is very focused on an eight-year deal. It’s still the No. 1 priority for him and the Bruins also want a long-term contract. But you can’t talk about goaltender Igor Shesterkin without linking Swayman to it since those are different negotiations. According to the collective agreement, Swayman does not have the same negotiating power since he will not be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Shesterkin has better negotiating power. »

The 25-year-old Swayman went to arbitration last season before receiving a one-year, $3.475 million contract. He was eligible for the process this year, but neither he nor the Bruins opted to pursue it.

Last season in 44 games, he had a goals-against average of 2.53 and an efficiency rate of .916. This was his fourth season with Boston, after being drafted in the fourth round.

During his career, he has a record of 79-33-15 with a save percentage of .919 and a goals against average of 2.34.
