Serie A; Napoli take top spot for first time in over a year

Napoli won against Monza this Sunday during the sixth day of Serie A. A success which allows Antonio Conte’s players to find themselves at the top of the ranking for the first time since June 2023.

After five first days full of surprises, Serie A returned to normal on the 6th day, with a new leader, Naples, who is reminiscent of the dominant team during the 2022 season -23. For the first time since June 2023 and its third league title, Naples regained its place as leader of Serie A by beating Monza (2-0). Antonio Conte’s team opened the scoring in the 22nd minute thanks to their striker Matteo Politano who outpaced the Monza defense. His Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead eleven minutes later to validate his team’s fourth victory this season.

“We experience strong emotions, but we think of nothing other than winning our next match, the season is still long,” warned Politano. With its 13 points, Napoli is one length ahead of Juventus Turin, winner of Genoa on Saturday (3-0). The two other big names in Italian football, AC Milan and Inter, are now 3rd and 4th (11 pts each) after their success respectively against Lecce (3-2) and on the field of Udinese (3-2 ). Under the leadership of Conte and thanks to an ambitious and expensive summer transfer window, Naples seems to have definitively turned the page on its catastrophic 2023-24 season which ended in 10th place after passing through the hands of three coaches. Earlier on Sunday, Torino, leader before the start of this 6th day and for the first time since 1977, conceded its first defeat of the season against Lazio (3-2).

Bad week for Torino

Toro fell to 5th place with eleven points. Against Lazio, the team coached since this season by Paolo Vanoli, never found the solution, conceding a first goal in the 8th minute on a shot from Matteo Guendouzi, served by another former Marseillais, Nuno Tavares. The Franco-Senegalese Boulaye Dia doubled the lead (60th), before the Scotsman Ché Adamas revived Torino (2-1, 67th). Barely coming into play, Tijjani Noslin brought the score to 3-1 (89th), before a second goal from Torino, for the honor, in added time.

“Our first period really made me angry, we played much better after the break. It’s a shame because when we play like we did in the second half, we can put any team in difficulty,” analyzed Vanoli. Lazio, ’s future opponent in the Europa League on Thursday, is provisionally placed in 7th place with ten points. Its great rival, AS Roma, suffered at the Olympic Stadium to beat (2-1) the promoted Venice which led until the 74th minute, before collapsing on goals from Bryan Cristante and Niccolo Pisilli. Roma, who have recorded two victories and a draw since the replacement of Daniele De Rossi by Ivan Juric, climbed to 9th place (9 pts).
