Manchester City weakens its 1st place in Newcastle

Manchester City weakened its leadership position at Newcastle (1-1) at the opening of the 6th day, Saturday, for the first Premier League match played without its midfielder Rodri, seriously injured last weekend.

First with 14 points, the reigning four-time English champion can be overtaken by Liverpool (2nd, 12 pts) and Aston Villa (3rd, 12 pts) if they win respectively at Wolverhampton on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) and at Ipswich on Sunday ( 3:00 p.m.).

Arsenal can also come back to the level of the Citizens in the event of success on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) against Leicester in London.

At St James’Park, Manchester City had to cope without two key players, the Belgian offensive leader Kevin De Bruyne, injured, and the Spanish defensive midfielder Rodri, victim of a ruptured ligament in his right knee on Sunday against Arsenal (2-2 ) and whose season is over.

In their absence, Pep Guardiola installed Rico Lewis and Matteo Kovacic in front of the defense, and entrusted Ilkay Gündogan to play as a playmaker, supporting Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian striker remained silent for the first time this Premier League season, having scored ten goals in the first five matches.

Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol took on the role of scorer with a sequence worthy of an attacker: left hook, right shot (35th, 0-1).

Newcastle, far from giving up, pushed and got back on track with a penalty obtained and converted by Anthony Gordon (58th, 1-1).

In added time, his goalkeeper Nick Pope released a beautiful volley from Bernardo Silva (90th + 2).

Newcastle are fifth with eleven points and are getting back on track after suffering their first defeat of the season last weekend at Fulham.
