Baseball: A record 121st defeat for the White Sox

The Chicago White Sox set a sad record Friday night in MLB. They conceded to the Detroit Tigers their 121st defeat of the season, a record in the modern era of the American League.

Beaten 4-1, the White Sox – who on Friday evening had only 39 victories in this 2024 financial year – therefore brought down the mark of the New York Mets from 1962 (120 defeats, for 40 victories). But the Mets had a good excuse to make since it was the franchise’s inaugural season in New York.

Chicago, on the other hand, is not supposed to be rebuilding. The White Sox, who won their division in 2021 by winning 93 regular season games, “simply” experienced a nightmare exercise in every way. With a series of 21 defeats and two others of 14 defeats.

One team did worse than these 2024 version of the White Sox: the Cleveland Spiders, who only won 20 games – for 134 losses. But their best players had by then all been traded to the St. Louis Browns, owned by two brothers who also owned the Spiders. A conflict of interest which has since been banned by Major League Baseball.
