“I’m quite hard on myself”: a moment of frustration for Patrik Laine in CH training

There is only one person who risks being harsher on Patrik Laine than the Canadiens’ fans if it doesn’t work. Patrik Laine himself.

He seemed annoyed at times during Friday’s practice, unhappy with his performance during certain drills.

The newcomer to the Habs, who occupied a place in the second wave of the power play, did not try to shy away when questioned on the subject by a colleague.

“I’m pretty hard on myself. If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m sure it will happen, he told reporters with great honesty. Obviously, I know what I am able to accomplish and why I am here. So when it doesn’t work, I’m hard on myself. I am very demanding. I have to be able to find a balance, especially since I haven’t played much recently.

Although he understands his player, Martin St-Louis must always learn to know him better to give him the tools so that he can better deal with the pressure he puts on his shoulders.

“It’s a process. I think when I spend more time with a smaller group, I will be able to focus on that a little more. Learn to know him better, learn his tendencies and how he behaves with ups and downs,” argued the CH head coach.

Mark and nothing else

The strategies employed by St-Louis, the new conductor of the Habs’ numerical advantage, do not seem to worry Laine too much. For him, all that matters is scoring.

“I don’t care what we do [sur l’avantage numérique]as long as we score goals, he said. […] I was part of a power play in Winnipeg that had 35% success and no one was moving on the ice while other power play units are constantly moving, like Edmonton.

All that remains to be seen is whether he will be able to operate the second unit.
