Their installation, in June 2024, was an event. Four months after being hung on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, the olympic rings were removed, during the night of Thursday 26 to Friday 27 September 2024. They should, in principle, be replaced by a more durable structure to remain there until 2028 as desired by the Paris town hall, noted a photographer from the ‘AFP.

Anne Hidalgo’s project is debated

The Parisian elected official, Anne Hidalgo, hopes that this symbol of Olympism remains on the monument emblematic of the capital until the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. But the thirty-ton structure, 29 meters long and 15 meters high, made by the steelmaker Arcelor Mittal was not designed to withstand winter weather conditions .

The City of Paris, owner of the Eiffel Tower, and the IOC, owner of the Olympic logo, have said they are working on construction of new rings lighter, while the old ones will be melted.

While waiting for them to be installed, smaller circles were hung on the Iéna bridge, just opposite, to “provide continuity”, according to the town hall. Anne Hidalgo’s project to keep the rings on the Eiffel Tower has raised strong criticism among heritage defenders and descendants of Gustave Eiffel.

The latter believe that their maintenance would attack on the work of their ancestor erected 135 years ago, which in their eyes is not intended to display an “advertising sign”, the rings being a commercial brand.
