Lakers studying ‘scenario’ for LeBron and Bronny James’ debut

Drafted in 55th position by the Los Angeles Lakers, Bronny James will play with his father LeBron this season, even if coach JJ Redick assures that he has not yet decided on a specific plan.

The Los Angeles Lakers have not yet planned a game plan for star LeBron James and his son Bronny, a month before the start of the NBA season, coach JJ Redick said Wednesday. LeBron James, a basketball legend who will be entering his 22nd NBA season at 39, will form with his son Bronny the first father-son duo on the same court in the North American professional league.

“We figured out how to do it”

“We haven’t planned anything in particular on how we’re going to do it,” Redick said when asked at a news conference Wednesday about how the big first would play out, with the Lakers opening their season Oct. 22 at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. “We’ve obviously talked about it within the coaching staff, figured out how to do it, but we haven’t settled on a specific scenario. There’s obviously going to be a discussion once we all get together with Bronny and LeBron, they have to be part of that discussion.”

Drafted 55th overall by the Lakers in June, Bronny James (19) is expected to spend most of the season in the G League, the NBA’s developmental league. Redick (40), a former NBA player who retired in 2021 and became a television consultant, became the Lakers’ coach in June after Darvin Ham was ousted following a first-round playoff exit.

The young coach, close to LeBron James, will have to above all manage the health of his star player who will celebrate his 40th birthday in December. “Everyone here is aware of the fact that he will soon be 40 years old. But during the first oppositions (in training), he went all out,” assured Redick. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka notably mentioned an action in training where Bronny found himself defending, without success, on his father, before being subjected to a slight “trashtalk”.
