Andi Zeqiri is eager to discover Sclessin in a new light: “I am aware of the pressure on my shoulders, but I like it” – Tout le foot

Between Andi Zeqiri and Ivan Leko, who have a similar mentality, according to the new Standard striker, the understanding already seems optimal. The Swiss is eager to discover Sclessin and hopes to weigh in the balance against the Union.

One of the flagship recruits of the Standard summer transfer window arrived just before the transfer window closed. Andi Zeqiri made a successful debut with the Rouches, scoring the second goal on Dender’s pitch. In a press conference this Thursday, the Swiss spoke about the benefits he can bring to Matricule 16, being well aware of his important role.

I am aware of the pressure on my shoulders, but I like having responsibilities.”

“I try to be as versatile as possible to help the team. Playing alone up front, or with two strikers, it doesn’t change much as long as I have the pleasure of playing. I adapt to what is best for the team.”

“I am aware of the pressure on my shoulders, but I like having responsibilities. I need to feel that I am important, that’s what pushes me to become better. There will probably be ups and downs, but I will always be focused on the goal.”

After his goal, Zeqiri rushed into the arms of Ivan Leko, grateful for the chance he received on the banks of the Meuse. The 25-year-old striker was going to be third choice at Racing Genk, and did not want to go to Charleroi.

“I’ve had a lot of difficult moments, it was an opportunity to express my joy as a thank you. I let go of what I’ve experienced, and what’s more, this phase of the game was prepared. Leko had clearly told me that there were spaces behind their defence and that I could take advantage of them. From the start, when he learned of Standard’s interest in me, he immediately saw me in his team. He’s Croatian and I’m Kosovar by family, our mentality is similar.”

I’m waiting for the fire. With Genk, I had already been fascinated by Sclessin”

This Friday, Andi Zeqiri will play for the first time in Sclessin under the colors of Liège. The player loaned by Genk is looking forward to discovering “hell” in a new light, this time being on the right side.

“I’m waiting for the fire. I played here with Genk last season, I was already fascinated by the supporters. And now, playing for the club is unique. We have to prepare well, the two home games will be important. Union is a great team, we can’t hide that. We are well prepared and we have analyzed the opponent to try to put them in difficulty.”

Standard to find the Nati?

In the coming weeks, once he is fully adapted and at his best physical level, Andi Zeqiri is expected to be an unshakeable presence in the Standard attack. A status that could allow him to return to the colours of the Swiss selection worn 11 times, but not once since the last qualifying match for Euro 2024 lost by the Nati in Romania.

“It’s great to play for your country. It would be important to get back into the national team, but I’m not fixated on it. The important thing is to perform well at the weekend with the club, the rest will follow. I’m in regular contact with the coach and his staff, we talk a lot. For them, it’s also good that I went to get some playing time, so that they can make their choice,” concluded Andi Zeqiri.
