“The anomaly is this weekend’s Dembélé”, Rothen and Riolo disappointed by the Parisian striker’s match

Author of a double against (3-1) last weekend in Ligue 1, Ousmane Dembélé made us forget his efficiency problems for a while. But the Parisian striker fell back into his old ways against Girona this Wednesday in the Champions League (1-0), with numerous missed opportunities.

The respite was short-lived for Ousmane Dembélé. Author of a double against Brest in Ligue 1 last weekend (3-1 victory), his second and third goals of the season – as many as in the entire previous season -, the Parisian striker had managed to silence the criticisms about his lack of efficiency. But these quickly resurfaced after the performance of the former Barcelona player against Girona, this Wednesday in the Champions League (1-0 victory).

Dembélé has indeed fallen back into his old ways by missing a number of opportunities, including a huge one in the 53rd minute of play, when the score was 0-0 and he was alone in the goal.

Riolo: “Dembélé, it has always been frustration”

“We can get him, but he’s the usual Dembélé. The anomaly is the Dembélé of this weekend. We mustn’t get used to Brest because he’s never been like that,” said Jérôme Rothen in After Foot, Wednesday evening on RMC. “If you’re counting on Dembélé to be decisive and score 15 goals in the year… Guys, we’re dead,” continued our consultant, who also expressed his incomprehension at the decision to let him take set pieces.

“Dembélé, it has always been frustration, ‘I close my eyes it can go in'”, supported Daniel Riolo, still in the After Foot. “What characterizes him best is the goal against Barca last year: the missed control, the foot that goes backwards with the slide and the ball under the bar.”

Dembélé’s newfound efficiency, who scored three goals last week (1 goal with the French team against Belgium on Monday, September 9, two goals against Brest five days later), was nevertheless a real reason for hope. “He’s happy, he’s more confident than before,” Luis Enrique assured DAZN after the match against Brest. One evening was enough to dampen hopes of seeing “Dembouz” transform into a serial scorer.
