Defenseman Victor Hedman was named captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
Hedman succeeds Steven Stamkos, who joined the Nashville Predators after signing free agency.
Forward Nikita Kucherov and defenseman Ryan McDonagh will be his assistants.
Hedman signed a four-year, $32 million contract extension in July. This season, he will enter the final year of an eight-year, $63 million contract signed in July 2016.
Hedman had 13 goals and 63 assists in 78 games last season. He added 1 goal and 6 assists in 5 playoff games. The Lightning were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup winners, the Florida Panthers.
Selected second overall by the Lightning in 2009, Hedman has 156 goals and 572 assists in 1,052 National Hockey League games.
Foligno named Blackhawks captain
