Champions League: New criteria will decide between teams tied in the standings

The Champions League wrote a new page in its history on Tuesday, September 17, by inaugurating its new single-pool format. From now on, the teams are no longer placed in a pool of 4, but in a mini-championship that brings together all 36 qualified clubs.

The level of opponents taken into account from the 6th criterion

During this “league phase”, each club faces eight different competitors. The eight best-ranked teams at the end of this mini-championship will be directly qualified for the round of 16. Clubs ranked between 9th and 24th place will play play-offs between themselves. Clubs ranked between 25th and 36th place will be eliminated from all European competition.

In this unique group, teams could find themselves tied on points… after facing different opponents. So how can these clubs be separated as fairly as possible? UEFA has established ten criteria, which are as follows in order of priority:

1. Best overall goal difference

2. Most goals scored

3. Most goals scored away from home

4. Most matches won

5. Most away games won

6. The highest number of cumulative points of the opponents faced

7. The best collective goal difference of the opponents faced

8. The greatest number of goals scored collectively by the opponents faced

9. Lowest number of fair play points (3 points for a red card, 1 point for a yellow card)

10. The UEFA coefficient
