‘It’s special to win this way’: Vincent Kompany savours big win with Bayern in Champions League (video)

Vincent Kompany began his Champions League campaign with a big win on Tuesday night for Bayern Munich. The German club beat Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 at the Allianz Arena on the opening day of the league phase.

With four goals from Harry Kane, two from Michael Olise and goals from Raphaël Guerreiro, Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka, Bayern are the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League match.

“Nine goals is extraordinary but for us, it’s the three points that are important tonight. It’s special to win in this way. We conceded two goals but then we scored nine thanks to the collective spirit of this team,” Kompany commented in a press conference after the match.

Criticised when he arrived at Bayern, Kompany now responds on the pitch: “I love working with my players, I try to improve the team and simply improve myself. And to answer some of the criticism, I would say that you should not listen to it. Do you really want to stop believing in yourself because of these people? I don’t pay attention to the criticism that is online.”

With this sparkling victory, Bayern are provisionally top of the league table and could stay there thanks to the goal difference (+7): “Being top of the table after one game is good, but it’s far from important now. There are still other games to go.”

Author of a quadruple, Harry Kane now has seven goals in two games: “He is one of those players who does not need external motivation. It is easier for me as a coach, he is a natural leader.”

Bayern will face Aston Villa away on Matchday 2 on Wednesday, October 2.
