Mike Maignan, the big worry

Forced to leave prematurely due to thigh pain, Mike Maignan has AC Milan fearing the worst.

Mike Maignan had a nightmare evening on Tuesday, as AC Milan made their Champions League debut. Facing Liverpool at the San Siro, the Rossonneri lost 3-1 and the French goalkeeper played a full part in Milan’s failure by being more than approximate on the Reds’ first two goals.

While Milan opened the scoring through Christian Pulisic in the 3rd minutee minute, the French goalkeeper was first beaten by Ibrahima Konaté on a free kick taken from the side by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the former player, which was hit by his teammate Fikayo Tomori. And twenty minutes later, just before the break, he this time stayed on his line on a corner taken by Kostas Tsimikas, Virgil Van Dijk taking advantage to shoot it with a header from three meters.

And when returning from the locker room, Mike Maignan was left with another stroke of bad luck. The fault was Fikayo Tomori who dug his studs into the Guyanese’s left thigh, forcing the latter to come off. And if the club wanted to be reassuring at the end of the match, assuring that it was only a simple contusion, the Italian press mentions upcoming tests to determine precisely the nature of his injury and his unavailability.

The left thigh is not the only cause for concern for the French goalkeeper. Mike Maignan also felt pain in his right thigh on the clearance that opened the scoring for Milan and some fear a muscle injury. The concern is all the greater as the Frenchman’s usual understudy, Marco Sportiello, is out for another month due to a hand injury, which has forced Paulo Fonseca to throw young Lorenzo Torriani (19 years old) into the deep end.
