Neuer’s impressive glide replaced at half-time

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (38) was replaced at half-time in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb (9-2) due to a minor injury following an impressive aerial intervention.

He put his goalkeeper-liberator clothes back on. Manuel Neuer (38 years old) distinguished himself with an authoritative intervention very far from his goal in the 4th minute of the match between Bayern Munich and Dinamo Zagreb (9-2), Tuesday in the Champions League. The Bavarian goalkeeper ventured to the height of a central circle to head a long ball clear in front of the opposing striker Bruno Petkovic and his defender Dayot Upamecano. Carried away by his momentum, the 2014 world champion then performed an impressive glide, landing heavily on his back.

Replaced as a precaution

Taken care of by the medical staff, he took his place in goal before speaking again with the doctors during a stoppage in the first half. He was finally replaced at half-time by his understudy Sven Ulreich while Bayern were leading 3-0. His replacement also had a very complicated start with two goals conceded (Bruno Petkovic 48th, Takuya Ogiwara 50th) without having had time to touch the ball. Under the eyes of Neuer, present on the bench to follow the second half.

After the match, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was reassuring about his goalkeeper’s condition. “We didn’t want to take any risks,” said the Belgian. Neuer himself came to give an update on his condition to the press. “I fell once and after that it wasn’t the same,” he said. “Then I kicked a few more balls and I felt some pain in my thigh, but nothing serious.”

Neuer said he was rather optimistic about his chances of regaining his place in goal on Saturday against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga (3:30 p.m., Matchday 4). “Yes, I think I will come back,” he said. The Bavarian captain, who retired from international football this summer after the Euro with Germany, is entering the final year of his contract with his club where he has played since 2011.
