Players ready to take action in face of overloaded schedule: “A strike? If it continues in this direction, we will no longer have a choice”

“Yes, I think we are getting closer.”Rodri, 28, said at the press conference ahead of the first match against Inter. “If things continue like this, we will have no other choice at some point. But I don’t know what will happen. In any case, it is something that concerns us, because we are the ones who suffer. If you ask any player, they will all tell you the same thing. This is the general opinion of the players, not just mine.”he said.

Kevin De Bruyne feels good but fears gruelling season: ‘Players tried to talk but FIFA and UEFA don’t care’

The Spaniard made 64 appearances for club and country last season, a figure that is set to increase this season due to the change in format of the Champions League and the Club World Cup. “I can’t give an exact figure, but you can’t play 60 to 70 matches per season. Between 40 and 50 matches, a player can play at the highest level, but beyond that, his physical condition decreases considerably.”

Rodri, who was crowned European champion with Spain last summer, also stressed that too many matches had a negative impact on the quality of the game. “If people want to see better football, we need to be able to rest. We need to take care of ourselves, because we are the main players in this sport”he said. “The more matches there are, the lower the level and quality. In my humble opinion, the current football calendar is simply too busy.”
