In the United States, the violent arrest of Tyreek Hill, American football star, causes scandal

UNITED STATES – New shocking arrest on the other side of the Atlantic. Controversy is rising in the United States after the particularly muscular arrest of American football player Tyreek Hill during a traffic stop in Miami, the city where he plays for the Miami Dolphins.

The arrest, which took place on Sunday, has continued to grow in scale since Monday, particularly after the release of a video of the incident, irremediably bringing to the fore the problem of police violence against African-Americans in the country.

The local American football star was driving to Hard Rock Stadium to play his first game of the season against another Florida club, the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he was stopped by police. In footage released by Miami police by “concern for transparency”the tension seems to rise a notch when the player decides to roll up his window after an initial exchange with the agent.

The biker then repeatedly asks him to lower it, and threatens to pull him out of his luxury sports car. Immediately afterwards, the player is taken out by several officers, put on the ground and handcuffed, with one of the officers holding his hand with his knee on the small of his back.

In the 105-minute video from body-worn cameras, the Miami Dolphins receiver is eventually picked up and held down by one officer before a second officer jumps on him and pins him to the ground, not without protests from Tyreek Hill.

Tyreek Hill, who was with two other players, was eventually released quickly after being issued traffic tickets.

After this mishap with the police, the American athlete chose to speak out on social media, with a particularly strong sentence: “What would have happened if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?”

During the game he was initially going to on Sunday, the player still contributed to his team’s victory (20-17), even allowing himself a celebration in reference to his muscular arrest. After a touchdown, he thus mimed his arrest, but especially his probably unnecessary handcuffing. For its part, Tyreek Hill’s team spoke out on Monday, deploring an incident “infuriating and heartbreaking.”

For the Miami Dolphins, the incident “remembers that not all situations like these end so peacefully”. “‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill’ is a question that will have a resounding impact”the club added, directly referring to its player’s response.

For its part, the Miami police indicated that one of the officers in question has been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation takes place. However, the Miami police union believes that the American football player is not completely blameless, pointing out the fact that he had not “did not cooperate immediately” during the inspection, which justified it being “handcuffed”.
