A month after her flop, Australian b-girl Raygun becomes world number 1

A month after his singular performance in the breaking event at the 2024 Olympic Games, which earned him a wave of “pretty devastating hatred”Raygun is getting a little revenge. Australian Rachael Gunn is now number 1 in the world in the women’s ranking of the discipline, established by the World Dancesport Federation (WDSF).

As reported by Australian media outlet News, the 36-year-old b-girl is particularly benefiting from her victory at the WDSF Oceania Championships. It was this victory that allowed her to qualify for the Olympic Games, where she ultimately finished second to last with her performance mocked by many.

Olympic medalists absent

The relevance of the ranking is questionable, as it does not include Japanese Olympic champion Ami “Ami” Yuasa. The same goes for Lithuanian Dominika “Nicka” Banevic and Chinese Liu “671” Qingyi, who both made it to the podium at Paris 2024. It seems that the competition at the Olympics did not allow for a single point to be recorded.

Rachael Gunn, also a lecturer at the University of Sydney, stood out in Paris with her imitation of a kangaroo. Her movements were parodied around the world, but also sparked criticism questioning the selection process. “I worked really hard to prepare for the Olympics and I gave it my all, really,” she defended herself a few days after her appearance on the Place de la Concorde.

“I’m really sorry for the negative reactions that the community has had to endure too… but I can’t control how people react,” she then commented in early September. A statement that notably responds to the questions of other b-girls, who feared that this sequence would have harmful consequences in the medium and long term for their discipline.
