Deschamps and Mbappé booed by part of the Lyon crowd before the match

After 12 years of reign, punctuated by a world champion title in 2018, Didier Deschamps sees his popularity with the French public fade. The French coach was greeted by whistles from part of the crowd gathered in the Décines-Charpieu stadium when the team line-ups were announced ahead of France-Belgium, this Monday, September 9.

It’s a small event in the history of the former Monaco coach since he took charge of the French team. Three days earlier, a few “Zizou, Zizou” had escaped from the stands of the Parc des Princes while Italy crushed the Blues (1-3).

“I am immersed, I am doing my own analysis with internal elements that you do not have,” the Basque reacted at a press conference. “Everyone is free to write what they want. I do not live in a bunker, I meet a lot of diverse and varied people too. The supporters are not going to be happy that we lost 3-1. I understand and it is part of my life as a coach.”

Barcola and Guendouzi not spared

Substitute at kick-off, Kylian Mbappé was also targeted by a few boos. Whistles possibly linked to his poor performances in Blue in this year 2024, but also to his controversial statements before France-Italy.

For other reasons, no doubt, Bradley Barcola was entitled to the same preferential treatment. Last year, the Lyon native left his training club, OL, on the sly to join PSG. The Rhone public has not forgotten him.

He also did not forget the former Marseillais Matteo Guendouzi, a surprise starter against Belgium, who was also the target of whistles. This is a little less rare than in the case of Didier Deschamps.
