Wawrinka knocked out in the first round by Bellucci – rts.ch

The US Open, the fourth Grand Slam of the year, only lasted a short round for Stan Wawrinka (ATP 176). The Vaudois, who had received an invitation to participate in the tournament, was eliminated by the Italian Mattia Bellucci (101) 6-4 7-6 6-3 after 2h13 of play.

It all started badly for Stan Wawrinka. After a small altercation with the chair umpire in the 2nd game, the Vaudois offered the first break of the match to his opponent in the 5th game. After managing to regain the serve of his opponent, who had come out of the qualifications, in the following game, the triple Grand Slam winner once again gave way in the following game, conceding a 2nd consecutive break. Without being able to show himself dangerous again on the opponent’s serve, Wawrinka logically lost the first set 6-4.

Having regained some of his brilliance in the second set, Wawrinka managed to take Bellucci to the tie-break. But while he had unleashed a splendid forehand down the line at 4-4 in the latter, the Vaudois offered the next 3 points on 3 unforced errors, synonymous with a second set for the Italian.

Too many gifts

In the 3rd set, despite the assaults of Bellucci, capable of disconcerting shots and a remarkable serve despite his relatively small size (1m78), Wawrinka once again managed to get break points, keeping alive the hope of a crazy comeback. It was during the 5th and 6th games of this last set that the hopes of the Vaudois came to an end, the Lombard saving 2 break points thanks to two aces, before stealing the serve of the former world number 3 one last time, concluding the game a few minutes later.

Stan Wawrinka ends his 2024 Grand Slam tour having won only two matches, one at Roland Garros and one at Wimbledon, being eliminated in the first round at the Australian Open and the US Open.
