Free of any contract, Memphis Depay opts for a surprising destination

A destination that no one could have predicted at the start of the transfer window. Free of any contract after his departure from Atlético de Madrid on July 1st, Memphis Depay was looking for a new challenge. And this new challenge is quite surprising, since the Dutch international (30 years old) will be leaving Europe for the first time. According to Globo Esporte, the Brazilian club Corinthians has reached an agreement with the former Mancunian, for a two and a half year contract, at 400,000 euros per month.

The Brazilian media reports that “only bureaucratic details” remain to be settled, but the former Blaugrana is expected this weekend in Sao Paulo, to carry out his medical examinations and formalize the agreement.

“Media” attacker wanted

In addition to a real number 9, Corinthians were looking for a star. Even though the Brazilians had already signed seven players this summer alone, no “star” striker arrived. But with the Oranje international, that’s now a done deal.

The Sao Paulo club had initially negotiated with Benfica for the Brazilian Arthur Cabral, but the demands of the Lisbon team had cooled the Brazilian club, which then turned to Memphis Depay as its last hope.

After an initial offer deemed insufficient, Timao returned with a more substantial offer, and despite competition from Saudi and Mexican clubs, it is Corinthians who will welcome the former Atletico player for free, who was involved in 11 goals last year under Diego Simeone (nine goals and two assists).
