At the end of regulation time, Australia took the upper hand over Argentina (20-19). Donaldson scored the decisive penalty.

Australia came from behind to win 20-19 in Argentina and end an eight-game losing streak in round three of the Rugby Championship on Saturday.

Fly-half Ben Donaldson kicked the winning penalty in the dying seconds of the match, after his team had trailed 10-0. It was Australia’s first win in the Championship since a 25-17 victory over South Africa in 2022. In the standings, South Africa, who beat the All Blacks on Saturday, lead the table with 14 points, ahead of New Zealand (6 points). Argentina are third (5 points) and Australia are the last two (4 points).

Australia finds taste of victory again

The Wallabies responded with tries from scrum-half Jake Gordon and second-row Rob Valetini to the Pumas’ try from flanker Juan Martin Gonzalez. The rest was down to kicking.

“Honestly, it feels good”said Australian captain Harry Wilson, “Obviously it was pretty stressful in the last few minutes, but I loved how disciplined we were at the end, using pick-and-drives and trying to push them until we got a penalty.”.

After back-to-back defeats to South Africa last month, Australia coach Joe Schmidt brought in another fresh start to his squad. Centre Hamish Stewart made his debut on Saturday, becoming Australia’s 15th new signing this season.
