Somluck Kamsing, the first Thai Olympic champion in history, was found guilty of kidnapping a minor for the purpose of assault and attempted rape.

A court in Khon Kaen (north-east) on Thursday sentenced the first Olympic champion in Thailand’s history, boxing title winner in 1996, to just over three years in prison for attempted rape of a minor.

Somluck Kamsing, 52, was found guilty of kidnapping a minor for the purpose of assault, and attempted rape, announced the court, which also ordered the payment of 170,000 bahts (4,800 euros) in damages. .

The former boxer appealed following the verdict, and obtained his release on bail. Somluck became a hero in Thailand after his featherweight gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A 17-year-old girl filed a complaint in December 2023, accusing him of sexual assault in a hotel from Khon Kaen.
