Tense scene in Balaídos after the final whistle of the match between Celta Vigo and Athletic Club (2-1 victory for Bilbao). Óscar Mingueza, Celta Vigo defender trained at Barça, was sent off after a verbal altercation with referee Ortiz Arias. In the match report, the reason is explicit: “You are a chulo” (you are a pimp) would have thrown the player at the man in black, accompanied by reproaches for fouls not whistled against him: “”There had four fouls and you don’t even give me one, it’s incredible”, he added. An attitude which left no room for interpretation for the Madrid referee, already accustomed to controversies with Celta players.
An ultra tense match
This post-match red card comes on top of a match marked by unusual refereeing decisions. Indeed, the only other warning of the evening was a yellow sent to Ilaix Moriba… while he was still on the sidelines, for having contested a decision in the middle of a warm-up. Ortiz Arias, known for his intransigence, has already had disagreements with players, like Renato Tapia or David López, in similar episodes. For Mingueza, this slip-up could earn him a suspension of several matches, a hard blow for his team, currently in difficulty in the championship.
