The Swiss Noemi Ruegg won the Tour Down Under in Australia on Sunday, the opening event of the women’s cycling season, at the end of the final stage won in a sprint by the American Chloe Dygert, Olympic team pursuit champion in Paris.
Ruegg (EF Education-Oatly) remained among the leading riders in Sunday’s stage and crossed the line in third position.
-Aged 23, she took control of the Tour on Saturday by winning the second stage with 15 seconds ahead of the Dutchwoman Silke Smulders (Liv Jayco AlUla).
“I was super nervous”
She finished the Tour Down Under in second place, ahead of Norwegian Mie Bjorndal Ottestad (Uno-X Mobility), third.
“I was super nervous all day, I really wanted to bring home the trophy,” commented the winner. My team was perfect, I was able to conserve energy at the start of the stage and concentrate on the last two laps.”
The 25th Men’s Tour Down Under begins Tuesday in Adelaide for six stages.
