Preliminary round
32 teams have qualified for the preliminary round of the men’s handball world championships, which take place from January 14 to February 2, in Norway, Denmark and Croatia. The teams are divided into eight groups of four. The top three qualify for the main round. The last is transferred to the President’s Cup, a sort of second competition to play ranking matches, from 25th to 31st place.

The 24 teams qualified for the main round are divided into four groups of six. The first two teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals, the others are eliminated.
