Gauthier Onclin disappointed with his elimination but proud of his performance at the Australian Open: “There was a small place to pass”
For his first steps in the final draw of a Grand Slam, Gauthier Onclin did not tremble but he did not go the distance against the American giant Reilly Opelka with a defeat in four sets, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-2.
“I wasn’t afraid, I got into my match well with the first set falling into my hands”explained the Liégeois who came out of qualifying. “I think the second set was super important and decisive. I had chances at the start but I felt that he was gradually getting into the game. My service games were more complicated. Then I lead again 2-0 in the tie-break but I lose this set. I had a little hole at the start of the third set when I was two games to zero in front. It’s a shame.”
