“The players were unanimous”: Jan Vertonghen awarded for a project that is very close to his heart – Tout le football

Jan Vertonghen is starting the year well. His foundation was rewarded by the Belgian sports union.

Every year, United Athletes, the Belgian union of professional and amateur athletes, meets to nominate a charitable organization to give it a check which will allow it to continue to develop.

It was the Jan Vertonghen foundation which won the prize for 2024. The latter was launched six years ago, on the occasion of the defender’s hundredth appearance for the Devils. It aims to build play areas for children, mainly within hospital complexes, to allow them to continue having fun despite illness.

A project that unites

“I am convinced that sport and play can have a positive influence on the mental well-being of children, this has also been confirmed by scientific studies” explains Vertonghen.

His foundation therefore received 25,000 euros to continue its initiatives. The jury was made up of players from D1A, D1B, as well as several members of the core of the Red Devils.

“This year, the players were unanimous in their choice to support the Jan Vertonghen Foundation. Jan does fantastic work to help children who often have to stay in hospital for long periods, sometimes for months” declares Sébastien Stassin, responsible for football players within the union.
