Among the main stars of the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament, which she won with Team USA, the footballer Trinity Rodman has the distinction of being a famous “daughter of”. In this case, his father is none other than the whimsical but no less legendary Dennis Rodman.
However, until now we knew very little about their relationship but, in the last episode of the podcast Call Her Daddythe Washington Spirit star took the opportunity to explain how this one could be… delicate.
« Our whole family protects him even though he never protected us once… » she regrets at first. “ Why was I so nice to someone so selfish? It's almost as if he himself made things worse, because he exposed us to everyone from a very young age… So, all this anger that I stored up without being able to let it out, it is something difficult [à gérer] In my opinion. »
Regrets, but no change…
Little present for his youngest daughter, 22 years old, and probably also for his other children Alexis (36 years old) and DJ (23 years old), Dennis Rodman had already admitted his wrongs, during his introductory speech to the Hall of Fame in 2011 .
« When people ask me if I have any regrets about my basketball career, I answer that I have one: I regret not having been a better father » declared the former player of the Pistons, Spurs, Bulls, Lakers and Mavericks.
Questioned about this statement more than a decade later, Trinity Rodman for her part regrets not having been able to somehow soothe, channel and cleanse the bad sides of her whimsical father…
« Do I believe it? Yes, I think he would have liked to be able to fight his demons » she admits. “ But I roll my eyes, because we hear this stuff so many times and he doesn't do anything to change it… The most frustrating part is that with all his success and wealth, he was surrounded by a lot of toxic people who took his money and took advantage of him. […] We tried to be his pillar and to be the good people around him. »
Obviously without success, since Trinity Rodman still harbors real resentment towards her father: “ He's not a father. Maybe blood, but nothing else. »
Dennis Rodman's (public) apology
On Instagram, Dennis Rodman responded to his daughter's comments with an apology.
« Sorry for not being the father you wanted me to be, but no matter what, I tried, I'm still trying, and I will always try to be. I'll keep trying, even if you're told not to answer my calls. I will keep trying, even when it is difficult. It doesn't matter how long it takes. I'm still here and I tell you all the time, in person, by phone or by message, how proud I am of you.
I always had one wish: that my children would call me and come see me. I hope one day I can get it. I stay present and I keep trying [d’être un meilleur père]. You have my number and you see when I call you. I'm still here.
PS: I watch you play every time (and I even flew to see you play, but I was told not to come because of the person with me, when I just wanted to encourage you . So I watched you from my hotel balcony to make everyone happy). I love all my children. »
Between anger and exasperation
Comments which also refer to those of Trinity Rodman, who explained “ not knowing » how her father feels, or where he is, as she now says to herself “ exasperated » when people ask him if he will come to one of his matches…
In 2021, Dennis Rodman had in any case gone to the stadium, without his daughter being warned, after several months of radio silence which had even caused the latter to… collapse in tears in his arms and in the eyes of everyone, after the match.
« When the final whistle blew, I was so angry! I told myself that he had ruined this moment of joy for me and that he had played with my emotions again » she will say on this subject…
