Lara Gut-Behrami scored a third consecutive World Cup podium by taking 2nd place in the first super-G in St. Moritz on Saturday. The Ticino woman was beaten by the Austrian Cornelia Hütter by 18 hundredths.
A single mistake cost the victory to the skier from Comano, who was perfect on almost the entire Grisons piste. Like several other competitors, she was surprised by a movement in the terrain and lost speed at the end of the course.
Lara Gut-Behrami, however, confirms her very good start to the season after having to ignore the opening giant of Sölden. She will once again be a candidate for the podium and victory on Sunday during the second super-G.
Hütter, victorious in the first downhill of the season at Beaver Creek, dominated the proceedings to claim an 8th World Cup victory, the first in St. Moritz. The podium was completed by the Italian Sofia Goggia, also in very good shape after winning the super-G in Colorado.
Vonn in the top 15
For her big comeback, Lindsey Vonn ranked in the top 15 despite a complicated first part of sliding. The American, whose last World Cup start dates back to January 20, 2019 in Cortina, conceded 1”18 to the winner of the day.
The “Speed Queen” with 82 World Cup successes, eight world medals and three Olympic podiums, attacked Engiadina too cautiously to get involved in the fight for victory. “This is the first step,” commented Vonn, all smiles under her famous double-pompom hat, explaining that she had mainly sought “to reach the finish line” with a “solid result”. “Today, I didn't take any risks at all, I just went down quietly and that's all I needed,” she said, after being cheered for a long time.
Corinne Suter is also gaining momentum after returning to Beaver Creek. The Schwyzoise finished 10th, one tenth from 6th place. Michelle Gisin (15th), Delia Durrer (21st) and Janine Schmitt (27th) ranked in the top 30, while Valaisanne Malorie Blanc (20) experienced a rapid elimination for her first World Cup start.
