A new handover. Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkéa) regained the lead of the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, Tuesday December 17, at 7 hours ahead of Charlie Dalin (Macif Santé Prévoyance) who had led the fleet since December 2.
The skipper, a native of Fréjus, had been attacking the leader for several days at the start of the crossing of the Pacific Ocean. By accelerating, he melted the distance separating the two ships. While he was less than 500 nautical miles from the leader nine days ago, less than 200 miles three days ago, he has not weakened. During the last score, Paprec Arkéa had, to its advantage, almost eight nautical miles ahead of its now runner-up. Third, Sébastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil) was sailing 48 miles from the lead.
Leader since December 2, Charlie Dalin, after fighting against Sébastien Simon, ended up giving in to Yoann Richomme. The two men are not at their first overtaking since they have regularly exchanged control of the race since the start, Dalin notably taking the lead at the Cape of Good Hope before Richomme enters first in the Indian Ocean.
Two withdrawals have been officially recorded in recent hours: the Hungarian Szabolcs Weöres (New Europe) and the British Pip Hare (Medallia). Weöres was dead last in the race and decided to retire at the end of Monday, two days after damage occurred off the coast of South Africa. Shortly later, it was Hare who had to face the inevitable, after being dismasted on Sunday.
