Was Zanka’s red card against Sint-Truiden logical? For Jonathan Lardot, the referee did not make a bad decision. At least we can’t prove it…
Anderlecht won 0-2 against Sint-Truiden this weekend. Reduced to 10, the Mauves held on to the score and won. But one decision is controversial…
Following a tackle by Zanka on Andrés Ferrari, the Mauves player was sent off from the match in the 67th minute of play. Many consultants and supporters believed that the ball had been touched by the player and that he was not shouldn’t have been red. But ultimately the decision was made, the Dane was excluded.
The technical director of arbitration, Jonathan Lardot, reacts to this contentious phase at the microphone of DAZN : “The most important thing for me is that the decision was made on the pitch. I’m very happy with that because we made more decisions on the pitch than last weekend. I think we did a step in the right direction.”
We can’t be sure if Zanka touches the ball
“On the one hand, we have the impression that Zanka is playing the ball. On the other hand, we see that Ferrari is playing the ball,” points out the former referee. “It’s very difficult to deal with, but you have to stay factual. What is the VAR process? From the camera’s point of view, it looks like the ball was touched. If we look at all the footage to get a view 360 degrees, we have doubts.”
“In other images we cannot be sure that Zanka is touching the ball. If we do not have 100% clear evidence of contact, VAR does not have to intervene and must support the decision on the pitch” , concludes Lardot.
