Each player from the United States who will be fielded in September 2025 in the state of New York will receive remuneration of $200,000, to which will be added $300,000 to be distributed for charitable purposes, detailed the PGA of America.
According to the organization, no player has explicitly asked to be paid for their participation in the Ryder Cup, but several media outlets point out that the subject has created tensions within the American team during previous editions of the competition.
In a letter cited by USA Today, the president of PGA of America, Don Rea, explains that the principle of remuneration was adopted “out of respect for the players”. “It is recognition of everything they have done for the Ryder Cup over the years,” he adds in this letter addressed, according to USA Today, to former captains of the American Ryder Cup teams.
Since 1999, American participants have received $200,000 to spend on charitable purposes.
While rumors of financial compensation for the United States representatives were already swirling, European stars Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy maintained that they did not need this carrot to give the best of themselves in Ryder Cup. “I think that on our side, we are playing for the honor of competing in this competition,” said Rose.
Title holder after its victory in 2023 in Italy, Europe will try to achieve its first victory on American soil since 2012 next September. The competition is played alternately in the United States and on the Old Continent.
