KRC Genk could have taken the lead at Jan Breydel and changed the course of the match… but Tolu Arokodare missed. And Simon Mignolet played a double role in this failure!
Of course, Simon Mignolet started on the right side and caught Tolu Arokodare’s delivery, which was a little soft. But the FC Bruges goalkeeper especially tried to influence his opponent during the minutes preceding the penalty, during the VAR check.
So, while the video referee was deliberating, Mignolet approached Tolu, whom he has of course known for several seasons now. “I told him not to shoot in the middle, because that’s where I would stay,” reveals the Bruges resident in comments relayed by the Nieuwsblad. “I advised him to choose a corner.”
Was Arokodare influenced by these comments? Still, he did hit to the left of Simon Mignolet… who relaxed and caught the ball, allowing Bruges to keep the score. “It’s for these kinds of moments that I still play. The stadium exploded,” rejoices Mignolet.
“Fortunately Tolu followed my advice (laughs). But there were other options at Genk, Steuckers could also kick him. We analyzed all that well,” assures the Gazelles goalkeeper. “It’s wonderful to be able to win this match, and I think it was very deserved.”
With these three points, Club Brugge is only a small point closer to Genk, still leader but less solid this Sunday than usual…
