FC Brugge dominated the Genko leader this afternoon, in a somewhat one-sided topper. However, Genk had the opportunity to open the score…
On paper, it was a real duel at the top between the two best teams in the Belgian championship this Sunday at 1:30 p.m.: Bruges and Genk. In fact, the Gazelles gave the impression that there were several classes of gap between them and a Genk who had been a solid leader until then.
In the first half, there was only one for Bruges: intelligent, quick combinations and chances which multiplied quickly. After a splendid backheel from Seys, Talbi goes for Maxim De Cuyper, who calmly crosses towards Christos Tzolis: it’s magnificently played… but it’s not 1-0, the Greek missing the target in an inexplicable way (8th) .
Genk reacts a little via Tolu who places a nice curling shot, in turn wide (12th), but the second huge alert comes from the feet of Raphaël Onyedika: little dribble and strike… on Van Crombrugge’s post (35th) . If KRC Genk tried to get out of their camp via a very good Adedeji-Sternberg, who gave Seys a hard time, Bruges had to lead at the break.
Genk put their noses to the window a little more in the second half, and Bruges let themselves fall asleep, again forgetting to score via Jashari. The Blauw & Zwart almost bite their fingers: Tolu Arokodare collapsed during a duel with Ordoñez, but the Nigerian missed his penalty in the process (73rd). Like Heymans yesterday at OHL, Tolu had to do better.
The Club is stung: Van Crombrugge must work to save the 1-0 in front of Jashari… but makes a mistake on the following corner, allowing Brandon Mechele to open the scoring (78th). This is the fatal blow: on a free kick nicely obtained by an elusive Vanaken, Andreas Skov Olsen calmly plants the 2-0, on a service which is again three stars of the double (and future triple?) Golden Shoe (86th , 2-0).
With this 100% deserved victory, Club Bruges comes within one point of a worrying Racing Genk this Sunday. Anderlecht can come back to within 4 points of Limburg, but would perhaps have preferred to see the leading duo not decide between themselves…
