NFL: Odell Beckham and the Dolphins part ways

The Miami Dolphins released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Friday, NFL Network and ESPN report, ending the veteran’s stay with the team four weeks before the end of the regular season.

The team and Beckham mutually agreed that it was time to go their separate ways.

Beckham missed the team’s two practices this week for what was described as “personal reasons.”

Beckham signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Dolphins in May, which could reach $8.25 million with bonuses. However, he underwent knee surgery early in the off-season and began the season on the physically unable to play list. The Dolphins knew Beckham likely wouldn’t be ready for the start of the season when they made the deal.

He made his practice debut in the first week of October and played his first game against the New England Patriots in Week 5. In nine games this season, Beckham has caught nine passes for gains of 55 yards.

Beckham joined the Dolphins hoping to become the No. 3 receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. He never assumed that role, however, as tight end Jonnu Smith established himself as the team’s third option in the passing game.
