Remco Evenepoel, who suffered multiple fractures after hitting the door of a Belgian Post car (Bpost), will join forces with this company as part of a prevention campaign against this type of accident, a- we learned on Wednesday. “Bpost, in partnership with the R.Ev Academy, is launching a prevention campaign against door accidents, also called “dooring”,” indicates a press release from La Poste.
Concretely, a sticker bearing the image of the Belgian champion will be affixed to the door windows to remind motorists to check for the presence of cyclists before opening, according to the same source.
Bpost drivers, already trained in the “Dutch technique” (opening the door with the opposite hand to better check the arrival of cyclists and/or pedestrians), will be the first equipped with this sticker, which will be installed on the the entire company fleet.
The general public will be able to obtain the sticker free of charge from December 10 via the website lereflexeremco.be.
“Road users must be attentive to each other,” recalled Remco Evenepoel.
According to Vias, the Belgian road safety institute, 339 cyclists were injured in 2023 after hitting a vehicle door. And, that same year, 98 of the 501 deaths recorded on the roads of Belgium concerned cyclists.
Last Tuesday, near Brussels, Remco Evenepoel was unable to avoid a Bpost car, whose postwoman had suddenly opened the door. The double Olympic champion in Paris, aged 24, suffered fractures to a rib, to the right shoulder blade, to a hand and suffers from contusions to the lungs and a dislocation of the right clavicle “which caused a tear of all surrounding ligaments,” according to a message he published Wednesday on X after having undergone surgery. He is not expected to return to training until the end of January.
