An Italian supporter of Atalanta Bergamo was sentenced on Wednesday to a three-year stadium ban in France and a fine of 600 euros for “provocation to hatred” at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille at the end of last season.
A stadium ban and a fine
On May 2, Olympique de Marseille hosted Atlanta Bergamo, a match which ended in a draw (1-1). A few days later, the Italian club soundly beat the Marseille club at home (3-0), eliminating them at the gates of the Europa League final. During the semi-final first leg, a Marseille supporter filmed reprehensible behavior in the parking lot reserved for Italians, including a supporter ostensibly mimicking a monkey, which led to referral to the Marseille prosecutor’s office.
A student was then arrested and tried at the end of October. On Wednesday, the Marseille criminal court handed down its decision, condemning him to a fine of 600 euros and a three-year stadium ban for “provocation to hatred”.
