The face of the new indoor swimming pool is taking shape in Fribourg. The Municipal Council chose the variant with a 50-meter pool and eight water lines which will make it possible to host national competitions and meet the needs of schools, sports and the general public.
“A pool covered with eight water lines 50 meters long will emerge from the ground over the next decade, on the Saint-Léonard sports site. Several additional pools will be added: paddling pool, learning area, fun area and diving”, the Municipal Council indicated on Tuesday.
A consultation was carried out with potential external partners of the project in order to find out their interest, including neighboring municipalities, the State of Fribourg, the University, the Friborg hospital (HFR). This approach made it possible to specify the needs of the partners, which were added to those of the city (schools, sports clubs and the general public).
100 million francs
The project costs are expected to be around 100 million francs. In order to benefit from the cantonal subsidy of 15 million francs, an application must be submitted to the canton before the end of 2025.
“Given the scale of the project and the marked interest of the third parties consulted, the Municipal Council plans to entrust the continuation of the work to a third party entity, yet to be defined and created,” he said.
This governance model will include among its objectives the establishment of a partnership between stakeholders, while ensuring control – particularly financial – by the City. It will take at least seven years for the construction of the swimming pool from the creation of this third party entity.
