In a recent interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Kamel Idir stressed that the future coach must have solid experience in African football, having already participated in a World Cup or having managed a renowned European team. These criteria made it possible to narrow down the options to a few prestigious names at the top of the list.
According to a source close to the normalization commission, Idir began discussions around two months ago with the agent of Marc Wilmots, a Belgian coach who led his country’s national team from 2012 to 2016. Wilmots also has experience African, having been at the head of Ivory Coast and Raja Casablanca, in addition to having coached the Iranian national team and held the position of sports director at Schalke 04, in Germany.
Wilmots’ profile seems to match the expectations of the Tunisian Federation, and the Belgian coach is very enthusiastic about taking on this challenge. However, it will face strong competition. In his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Kamel Idir clarified that the negotiations are being carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which will finance the future contract. “We started chatting with several foreign profiles. It is imperative for us to recruit a European coach with expertise in Africa and the World Cup to prepare the team for major competitions,” said Idir. He also criticized the current state of Tunisian coaches: “Honestly, what can we expect from local coaches? We must aim for excellence by calling on a high-level foreign technician. »
