Sabers general manager Kevyn Adams said Buffalo is not a top destination right now for free agents.
With his team sitting below .500 and out of a playoff spot, Adams hasn’t beat around the bush.
“We’re not currently a premier destination where you can go out and find unrestricted free agents who are key players. I just don’t think that’s the way to build a sustainable winning club. »
Adams, 50, was named general manager of the Sabers ahead of the 2020-21 season and has an overall record of 139-155-34 in his role.
Adams managed to lure some of his key players back to Buffalo in recent years, including defensemen Owen Power and Rasmus Dahlin, goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and forward Tage Thompson, but failed to convince elite unrestricted free agents to sign with the Sabres.
With five straight losses, the Sabers sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 11-12-3, six points behind the Boston Bruins for third place.
Buffalo has scored 90 points or more just once in the last 13 years and hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season.
The Sabers host the Utah Hockey Club in the morning on Saturday for their next game.
